Structural Engineering Supervisor – Product Design

Lead Engineers. Shape Products. Influence the Future of Metal Building Design.

Are you an experienced Civil or Structural Engineer ready to take the next step into people leadership?

Nucor Buildings Group is seeking a Structural Engineering Supervisor – Product Design to lead a technical team responsible for the development, evaluation, standardization, and continuous improvement of the structural products and systems used across our pre-engineered metal building business.

This is an opportunity for an experienced engineer to expand their impact beyond individual project design. You’ll coach and develop technical teammates, guide structural engineering decisions, influence product strategy, and collaborate across multiple Nucor Buildings Group divisions to improve the products, tools, and standards used by engineering and manufacturing teams every day.

If you have a strong background in structural steel, PEMB systems, building codes, connections, secondary framing, or metal building design and enjoy helping other engineers grow, this could be the leadership opportunity you’ve been looking for.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead and Develop a Technical Team

    • Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, and technical direction to the Product Design Team.
    • Help engineers and technical teammates grow their capabilities, solve complex problems, and realize their full potential.
    • Establish priorities for the team and ensure resources are focused on product improvements that create meaningful value for customers, engineering teams, and manufacturing operations.
    • Create an environment that encourages collaboration, continuous improvement, technical excellence, and ownership.

    Apply Structural Engineering Expertise

    • Lead the technical evaluation of pre-engineered metal building structural systems, including primary framing, secondary structural members, connections, cladding systems, foundation interfaces, and ancillary components.
    • Apply knowledge of structural steel design, building codes, loading requirements, and industry standards to guide product development and improvement decisions.
    • Evaluate existing products and systems for opportunities to improve structural performance, constructability, manufacturability, cost, and efficiency.
    • Provide technical guidance related to design issues, code changes, manufacturing concerns, field conditions, and product performance.

    Drive Product and Engineering Improvements

    • Lead the development and implementation of new or enhanced metal building products, components, engineering tools, and processes.
    • Evaluate potential improvements based on customer value, engineering effectiveness, manufacturability, cost, and implementation requirements.
    • Gather input from Design Engineering, Detailing, Customer Service, Production, Sales, Purchasing, vendors, builders, and customers to identify opportunities for improvement.
    • Lead product corrections and updates resulting from structural design issues, code changes, manufacturing feedback, testing, or field experience.
    • Promote consistency and alignment of product standards, engineering practices, tools, and processes across Nucor Buildings Group divisions.

    Collaborate Across the Business

    • Partner with engineering, manufacturing, sales, purchasing, technology teams, vendors, customers, and other Nucor businesses to solve technical challenges and improve products.
    • Provide strategic and technical support to Nucor Buildings Group divisions while encouraging benchmarking and the sharing of best practices.
    • Coordinate with third-party testing laboratories and certification organizations to support product testing, qualification, certification, and ongoing compliance.
    • Maintain and improve internal engineering references, product documentation, standards, and training materials.
    • Lead technical discussions and training related to products, systems, codes, and product changes.

Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of PEMB (Pre-Engineered Metal Building) experience with demonstrated in-depth knowledge of PEMB structural systems, secondary structural members, roofing and wall systems, foundation interfaces, connections, and related components.
  • Working knowledge of applicable building codes, load standards, and industry specifications, including IBC, ASCE 7, and AISC, as they apply to metal building systems.
  • Proficiency in engineering drawing interpretation, CAD software, electronic file management, and Microsoft Office products.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated PEMB industry experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.), particularly given the oversight of R&D, product certification, and structural evaluation activities.
  • Advanced degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
  • In-depth familiarity with the MBMA Metal Building Systems Manual, IBC structural provisions, AISC 360 (structural steel design), AISI S100 (cold-formed steel design), and applicable wind and seismic load standards.
  • Experience with product certification programs (e.g., FM Approvals, UL, ICC-ES) and processes for obtaining and maintaining certifications.
  • Hands-on experience with structural analysis software (e.g., RISA, STAAD, or proprietary PEMB design software), including an understanding of how design tools interface with product standards.
  • Experience in metal building erection, field construction, or jobsite quality, providing practical context for product design and improvement decisions.
