Senior Industrial Designer
We are looking for a Senior Industrial Designer with deep expertise in designing and developing Industrial products using Metal/ Steel. This role blends creativity, engineering know-how, and a strong understanding of industrial steel fabrication. You will be responsible for designing innovative metal building and related products, defining modularity, improving usability factors, and creating cost-effective, manufacturable solutions that align with customer needs and industry standards.
Basic Job Functions:
Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.
Key responsibilities of this role include:
- Design Industrial Steel Products for the Metal Buildings and related markets using user-centered principles, integrating ergonomics, intuitive usability, and machine-assisted human handling.
- Incorporate modularity, functionality, and customer requirements into design workflows.
- Ensure ease of assembly, packing, loading, and unloading while prioritizing safety and aesthetics throughout the product lifecycle.
- Utilize 3D design software such as SolidWorks and Rhino, along with visualization tools including KeyShot, V-Ray, or Lumion to create high-quality photorealistic renderings and models.
- Model complex components and assemblies using SolidWorks or equivalent software, optimized for 3D printing applications.
- Apply foundational knowledge of steel fabrication processes, material properties, and structural systems to support design and engineering decisions.
- Develop and evaluate prototypes or mock-ups to assess performance, durability, and usability under real-world conditions.
- Communicate and present technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring clarity and engagement.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experienced Industrial Designer, with at least 1-3 years focused on heavy manufacturing, metal industry.
- Design Portfolio demonstrating concept to manufacturing / Design for Manufacturing.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Industrial design/ Human Factors or related field.
- Minimum 2 years of experience designing products with Metal/ Steel / Sheet Metal experience
- Candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future. Nucor is unable to provide sponsorship for this role.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 6+ years of Industrial Design Experience in Industrial Domain
- Experience with sustainable design and green building standards (e.g., LEED, net-zero).
- Background in Architecture, Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering
- Knowledge of digital fabrication methods (3D printing, CNC).
- UX Research
- Exposure to construction technologies and on-site assembly processes.
- Experience collaborating with contractors, architects, and builders.
- Ability to balance cost, performance, and aesthetics in industrial building projects.
- Passion for advancing innovation in the steel construction and prefabricated building sector.
- Familiarity with BIM (Building Information Modeling) workflows.
Job Location:
This role can report to an office in Waterloo, IN, Portland, TN, or Swansea, SC depending on the candidate’s preferred location/proximity. This is not a remote position.
