Senior Industrial Designer

We are looking for a Senior Industrial Designer with deep expertise in designing and developing Industrial products using Metal/ Steel. This role blends creativity, engineering know-how, and a strong understanding of industrial steel fabrication. You will be responsible for designing innovative metal building and related products, defining modularity, improving usability factors, and creating cost-effective, manufacturable solutions that align with customer needs and industry standards.

Basic Job Functions:

Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

Key responsibilities of this role include:

1. Design Industrial Steel Products for the Metal Buildings and related markets using user-centered principles, integrating ergonomics, intuitive usability, and machine-assisted human handling.
2. Incorporate modularity, functionality, and customer requirements into design workflows.
3. Ensure ease of assembly, packing, loading, and unloading while prioritizing safety and aesthetics throughout the product lifecycle.
4. Utilize 3D design software such as SolidWorks and Rhino, along with visualization tools including KeyShot, V-Ray, or Lumion to create high-quality photorealistic renderings and models.
5. Model complex components and assemblies using SolidWorks or equivalent software, optimized for 3D printing applications.
6. Apply foundational knowledge of steel fabrication processes, material properties, and structural systems to support design and engineering decisions.
7. Develop and evaluate prototypes or mock-ups to assess performance, durability, and usability under real-world conditions.
8. Communicate and present technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring clarity and engagement.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Experienced Industrial Designer, with at least 1-3 years focused on heavy manufacturing, metal industry.
2. Design Portfolio demonstrating concept to manufacturing / Design for Manufacturing. 
3. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Industrial design/ Human Factors or related field.
4. Minimum 2 years of experience designing products with Metal/ Steel / Sheet Metal experience
5. Candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future. Nucor is unable to provide sponsorship for this role.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. 6+ years of Industrial Design Experience in Industrial Domain
2. Experience with sustainable design and green building standards (e.g., LEED, net-zero).
3. Background in Architecture, Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering
4. Knowledge of digital fabrication methods (3D printing, CNC).
5. UX Research
6. Exposure to construction technologies and on-site assembly processes.
7. Experience collaborating with contractors, architects, and builders.
8. Ability to balance cost, performance, and aesthetics in industrial building projects.
9. Passion for advancing innovation in the steel construction and prefabricated building sector.
10. Familiarity with BIM (Building Information Modeling) workflows.

Job Location:

This role can report to an office in Waterloo, IN, Portland, TN,  or Swansea, SC depending on the candidate’s preferred location/proximity. This is not a remote position.
