Basic Job Functions:
Provide materials science and engineering technical support as required in process/product metallurgy for Raw Materials, Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), Ladle Metallurgy furnace (LMF) and continuous caster in steel production facility. Perform chemical analysis, slag analysis, and inclusion analysis for scrap handling, melting, ladle metallurgy, slag fundamentals, and casting as required. Evaluate steel chemistry (alloying elements, chemical composition affecting costs, product performance, processing capabilities) to ensure required physical properties are achieved. Ensure manufactured steel and product designs meet customer requirements. Ensure laboratory equipment for analysis, such as OES Spectrometers, scanning electron microscopes (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and light optical microscope is calibrated, and customer requirements are within tolerance of equipment. Analyze samples under SEM, TEM, AFM for defects and inclusions to improve quality of rolled and cast products. Provide overall technical management support for cost savings, and new market opportunities. Responsible for data analysis using Minitab, Python, Excel , design of experiment and advanced statistical analysis to develop and optimize SOPs, minimize variability in steel making process and develop steel grades for specialized applications. Develop mathematical, physical and chemical models using MS Excel, Python, Thermo-Calc and FactSage to assist operators in decision making. Develop XGBoost and Pylearning Models to discover variable relationships. Work on product improvement initiatives and problem-solving projects to develop new methods to improve steel quality, steel cleanliness, and shop productivity for steelmaking. Develop new processes in plant trials. Develop cost models to optimize process conditions for LMF and other Melt Shop equipment. Develop chemical and physical criteria to ensure products meets specifications. Operate and maintain analytical equipment and work with quality systems to ensure chemical analysis lab is up to the latest standards. Minimum Qualifications:
Candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related field of study and two (2) years of experience as a Metallurgist in the steel industry. Experience must include: Analyzing data using Minitab, Python, Excel and providing overall technical management support for cost savings, and new market opportunities.
