What You'll Do

Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

The Commercial Internship Program is a hands-on summer internship designed to introduce students to the commercial side of the scrap metal recycling business. Interns learn how customer and supplier relationships are developed, how market conditions influence business decisions, and how commercial teammates support profitable business growth across the recycling group.

Interns work alongside commercial teammates and leaders to build foundational knowledge of scrap buying, material grades, market trends, pricing, customer service, logistics, and daily facility operations. Through field exposure, mentorship, and a summer-long business project, interns gain a practical understanding of what a commercial career in scrap metal recycling could look like after graduation.

Duties of the role include, but are not limited to:

• Participate in daily safety meetings and uphold safety, housekeeping, and operational standards.

• Shadow commercial teammates during supplier, customer, and vendor interactions.

• Assist with market research, prospect identification, customer follow-up, and sales preparation.

• Learn how market conditions, material grades, pricing, transportation, and logistics influence business decisions.

• Develop an understanding of the scrap recycling market through facility exposure, customer visits, and mentor shadowing.

• Support relationship-driven commercial activities focused on customer service, communication, and problem solving.

• Learn scrap metal identification, quality control, inventory practices, and facility operations from a commercial perspective.

• Review commercial or operational data and recommend improvements to safety, productivity, cost, or customer service.

• Complete a summer-long business project and present recommendations to division leadership.

• Build effective working relationships across commercial, operations, transportation, logistics, and leadership teams.

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Rising junior or senior working toward a bachelor's degree, preferably in Business, Sales, Economics, Finance, Supply Chain, or a related field.

• Strong organization, adaptability, team-orientation, and collaboration skills.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Ability to build relationships, collaborate, and work efficiently with team members.

• Interest in relationship-driven sales, customer service, market analysis, and the recycling industry.

• Ability to make decisions with confidence and demonstrate a continuous improvement mindset.

• Reliable transportation.

• Willingness to travel frequently.

• Willingness to work outside in extreme weather conditions in an industrial environment.

• Willingness to relocate post-graduation.

Preferred:

• Previous internship experience.

• Previous leadership experience.

• Previous sales and/or customer service experience.

• Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.

• Creative problem solving and continuous improvement mindset.
