Basic Job Functions:

 Utilize Metallurgic experience and knowledge of and experience in ASTM standards to provide technical support to Sales, and Customers for special bar quality steel (SBQ). Work closely with Sales, Scheduling, Outside Technical Service, and Production teammates, to ensure that customer requirements, product quality and expectations are met.  Responsible for performing technical review of customer RFQs, responding to customer concerns/complaints, and general questions with the necessary urgency.  Evaluate raw material specifications and develop processes to manufacture high quality steel for use in automotive, oil & gas, industrial and heavy machinery that must meet specialized design and performance specifications. Analyze product failure data and laboratory test results to determine causes of problems and develop solutions. Evaluate technical specifications and economic factors relating to process or product design objectives to meet customer needs. Utilize, maintain, and improve product specification databases/systems, ensure that internal specifications and instructions are set up properly to meet customer requirements. Work towards process standardization and support continuous improvement of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) tools deployed by Oracle.  Conduct or supervise tests on raw materials finished products- such as Tensile tests, Charpy tests, mechanical hardness, etc. to ensure their quality. Replicate the characteristics of materials and their components, using computers. Develop corrective actions and track its implementation and progress to prevent further defects. Work closely with teammates across functional areas to identify and correct root causes of product problems, including customer feedback and complaints. Conduct root cause and failure analysis of products with defects. Perform metallographic analysis of defects received from customers using SEM, EDS to evaluate microstructure, chemical distribution and assess potential manufacturing process used.  Review new product plans, and make recommendations for material selection, based on design objectives such as strength, weight, heat resistance, alloys, and cost. Responsible for organizing and maintaining PPAP documentation for assigned customers. Identify and drive continuous improvement projects based on customer feedback, product quality data, productivity goals and cost reduction targets. Establish and grow relationships with customer representatives while executing Technical Service function to advance Nucor’s mission of Commercial Excellence. 10% travel to customer manufacturing locations to learn and understand about their process which is vital during failure analysis and root cause evaluation. Provide support during customer audit of internal processes.

Minimum Qualifications:

​​​​​​​Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science or Mechanical Engineering and two (2) years of experience as a Metallurgist or in a Technical Service role within steel industry. Must have experience in: Performing metallographic analysis of defects received from customers using SEM, ED. Conducting root cause and failure analysis of products with defects. Conducting tests on raw materials finished products- such as Tensile tests, Charpy tests, mechanical hardness, etc. to ensure their quality. Working with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) tools deployed by Oracle. Steel production or primary metals manufacturing experience. Experience in and knowledge of ASTM standards related to SBQ products.
