Basic Job Functions:

Nucor Steel Lexington is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Plant Mechanical Engineer. Duties include: 

  • Optimize and maintain steel mill operations, steel manufacturing processes, machinery, and equipment.
  • Enhance operations and drive continuous improvement of the steel mill facility.
  • Responsible for overseeing the engineering aspects of the plant, ensuring efficiency, safety, and productivity while implementing best practices and innovative solutions.
  • Responsible overseeing project planning, procurement, construction management, and risk mitigation.
  • Utilize Microsoft project to define project scope of work and building schedule.
  • Provide technical expertise, guidance, and training to maintenance and operations teams.
  • Specify system components or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design, performance specifications, or environmental regulations.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and prepare 2D/3D drawings in AutoCAD/Inventor.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to streamline production processes and enhance operational efficiency.
  • Utilize Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Engineering software, data analysis tools (Excel), and computer-aided design (CAD) software (AutoCAD and Inventor) for modern engineering and design tasks.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement and develop strategies to optimize equipment performance, reliability, and maintenance schedules.
  • Conduct regular assessments of equipment, machinery, and systems to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead and participate in root cause analysis and troubleshooting to resolve technical issues.
  • Develop and manage preventive maintenance programs to uphold equipment reliability and minimize breakdowns.
  • Drive initiatives for cost reduction, energy efficiency, and waste reduction in line with sustainable manufacturing practices.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies, equipment upgrades, and capital investments to improve plant performance.
  • 10% International and Domestic Travel for trainings, meetings, and visiting equipment manufacturing and fabrication facilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have a Bachelor’s or foreign equivalent degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field of study and two (2) years of experience in a steel mill or heavy manufacturing industry.

  • Must have experience:

    • Optimizing and maintaining steel mill operations, steel manufacturing processes, machinery, and equipment. 

    • Utilizing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Engineering software, data analysis tools (Excel), and computer-aided design (CAD) software (AutoCAD and Inventor) for modern engineering and design tasks.

    • Overseeing all aspects of Project Planning, procurement, construction management, and risk mitigation.

    • Utilizing Microsoft Project to define project scope of work and building schedule.

    • Preparing 2D/3D drawings in AutoCAD/Inventor.

    • 10% International and Domestic Travel for training, meetings, and visiting equipment manufacturing and fabrication facilities.
