BACKGROUND: Universal Industrial Gases, Inc. (UIG) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nucor and a well-established, global engineer, constructor, supplier and operator of air separation plants and related equipment and services, based in Bethlehem, PA.  UIG owns and operates production plants across the USA which supply both Nucor steel sites and third-party clients 24/7 with tonnage quantities of oxygen, nitrogen and argon as well as exporting liquid cryogenic products by road tanker.

 

UIG is currently seeking a full-time onsite instrument and electrical specialist to oversee all aspects of instrument, controls, electrical, analytical and IT related equipment at Nucor Steel/UIG Air Separation Units (ASU). This position will be located at our (new) Nucor Steel/Berkeley County ASU located in Huger SC. Primary responsibilities will include supporting existing facilities and new projects, commissioning, and startup of new and upgraded facilities, and drawing review/approvals.
Occasional travel is required within the UIG operations region as well as occasional trips to the corporate office and vendor/customer facilities.

 

The responsibilities of the position include all aspects for maintenance, upkeep, and calibration of ASU site instrumentation, electrical and controls. 
Specific Responsibilities include: 


•    New and upgraded HMI and control systems, lifecycle management of all plant control systems, 
•    MV and LV switchgear maintenance and troubleshooting
•    testing and calibration of key process data acquisition instruments, quality control equipment such as analyzers, flow totalizers, transmitters, motor protection relays, and associated controls and instruments
•    HMI/PLC and other SCADA systems, 
•    SFAT/FAT testing as required, 
•    I&E equipment measuring production rates and product quality parameters, on-stream performance, environmental KPI’s, regulatory compliance.
•    Team member of the QCU

 

Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Ten years experience working as an instrumentation technician, Electrical engineer, or control system specialist in a continuous process plant or in the industry gas industry.
  2. Experience with Mechanical and Electrical Instrumentation-candidate should be able to lead complex engineering projects with minimal supervision, understand complex electrical and instrumentation principals in practical situations, provide oversite and project management of plant automation and controls projects, troubleshoot complex plant control and electrical problems, and possess skills in mechanical system maintenance including implementation and ongoing review of maintenance programs and asset management tools.
  3. Experience in Air Separation – Including an advanced understanding and hands-on experience of the operation and maintenance of cryogenic air separation plants and associated equipment and technologies.
  4. Experience with the various software systems used at an UIGI air separation plant, including, but not limited to MS Office suite, Plant PAX, FactoryTalk, and other SCADA and control systems in general use in the industry.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the use and maintenance of the tools and equipment necessary for repairing and replacing mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment.
  • Experience in standard automation software, control system programming, and human machine interface (HMI).
  • Experience working independently to troubleshoot, diagnose & solve issues with process and plant equipment; and to develop and rapidly implement corrective actions.
  • Experience training teammates on plant operations, quality control procedures and the proper techniques of instrument calibration and maintenance
  • Experience in water treatment technology and the principles of industrial refrigeration systems.
