Basic Job Functions:
The Safety Director collaborates closely with teammates, contractors and leadership to drive continuous improvement in safety culture, performance, and safety processes and systems. This role involves interpreting regulatory and consensus standards (OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, etc.), developing safety policies and procedures, and implementing safety programs.
The Safety Director works with division leadership on incident investigations, conducts safety audits, develops action plans and ensures follow-up, assesses risks and hazards, and prepares emergency response plans. Additionally, the Safety Director is responsible for developing and managing safety training and facilitating various safety teams.
A key responsibility of the Safety Director is to foster a robust safety culture at Nucor Steel Berkeley while leading and developing a team of safety professionals. The Safety Director also serves as a liaison with the onsite healthcare clinic and acts as an occupational health resource.
This position requires working scheduled and unscheduled overtime, some overnight travel, and the ability to promptly respond to safety needs.
Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related field (or) four years of equivalent experience
- Three years heavy industry experience in a safety focused role
- Two years of leadership experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Steel mill experience
- EMT Certification
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations and OSHA VPP experience
