Basic Job Functions:

SUMMARY:

The Driver/Material Handler is an integral part of the material movements between our two local manufacturing plants. They will help to package materials and secure them on the truck. They will be responsible for making daily deliveries between the Hartford and Jackson plants and assist with the coordination of the runs and material staging.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Fully understand how to operate and safely drive your delivery vehicle
  • Drive vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) under 26,000 lbs.
  • Transport pallet goods and packages from a place of origin to assigned destination
  • Pick-up loads and organizes goods in an ordered, logical manner
  • Ensure contents are properly secured inside of the truck to prevent breakage or damage
  • Safely and efficiently handle and unload goods from a truck at selected destinations
  • Confirm contents of each shipment load matches the manifest document
  • Perform inspections of your vehicle prior to and following each trip
  • Always ensure your vehicle is kept clean
  • Notify managers of any major maintenance or delivery issues encountered
  • Obey all applicable traffic laws and drive in according to the weather/road conditions
  • Comply with ICC and DOT regulations
  • Assist with packaging of materials on carts and or skids

 

Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

Minimum Qualifications:

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work 5:00am - 1:30pm Monday - Friday schedule. 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Experience driving a large company truck.
  • Experience with forklift and pallet jacks for material handling.
  • Ability to read and interpret work instructions.
  • Knowledge of SAP computer applications.
  • Ability to operate packaging tools and equipment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in order to interact with employees.
  • High attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondences, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and/or the general public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Travel requirements will include 30 hours per week of day trips between facilities and occasionally more.
  • Ability to squat, kneel and stand occasionally.
  • Ability to climb stairs and/or ladders rarely.
  • This position is exposed to inclement weather occasionally.
  • This position is in a manufacturing environment where the noise level is high.

Preferred Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
