Distributive Control System (DCS) Operator

Basic Job Functions:

Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

This Distributive Control System (DCS) Operator role consist of coordination and direction of plant operations to safely produce the highest quality direct reduced iron (DRI) at the lowest cost, with the highest productivity levels for the most profitable use in EAF operations within Nucor. Monitors pressures, gas mixes, and iron quality in the production of direct reduced iron (DRI). Handles and troubleshoots upset conditions from process changes and equipment failures and planning routine and major maintenance projects. Working with production management, maintenance, and environmental personnel to define and implement quality control standards and operational best practices to ensure the highest levels of safety and environmental efficiency at the plant. Leading overall safety processes and implementation at the plant. Serving as subject matter expert and management advisor to provide critical plant, safety, and process updates as required for Nucor’s executive decisions. Applying specialized knowledge of Nucor products, equipment and unique DRI production processes to recommend improvements to aid efficiency and quality of DRI production. Assists with the formulation of quality control standards and operational best practices. Monitors instrumentation readings. Receives field information from other teammates. Assist field teammates with safely performing maintenance and troubleshooting on conveyors, rollers, and other plant equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must have five (5) years of experience as a process technician ensuring efficient operating parameters and utility infrastructure operations in a DCS steel mill plant. Experience must include: Knowledge of Direct Reduction Iron (DRI) steelmaking process operating parameters, utility infrastructure operations and equipment. Operating and maintaining manufacturing equipment utilizing Distributive Control Systems (DCS) system and operations. Completing permits and equipment lockout forms compliant with OSHA standards. Identify DRI process and equipment performance inefficiencies and execute solutions to maximize reliability. Troubleshooting DCS instrumentation and controls using self-diagnostics and various diagnostic displays to improve plant performance.
