What You'll Do

Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

The Process Engineer drives efficiency and innovation across Nucor Raw Materials Group's 17 Automobile Shredders and 10 Metal Recovery Plants, identifying process, equipment, and technology improvements while staying ahead of industry trends. The role works closely with Advanced Technologies, Engineering, and Maintenance teams, and integrates directly with Nucor's steel mills to align recycled material output with mill requirements, develop new material uses, troubleshoot production issues, and ensure new processes meet quality standards. Beyond hands-on plant support, the role designs and supervises tests, tracks performance metrics, and maintains documentation to continuously improve plant operations.

 

Travel for this role ranges from 30-40%

 

Duties of the role include but are not limited to:

  • Assists in determining the best methods, processes, and equipment that optimize plant efficiencies across Nucor Raw Materials Group’s 17 Automobile Shredders and 10 Metal Recovery Plants.
  • Stays current with automobile shredder and non-ferrous metal recovery technologies and recycling industry trends.
  • Works with Nucor’s Advanced Technologies Group to investigate, test, and develop new uses for the plastics, metals, glass, and organic material in Automobile Shredder Residue.
  • Works with Project/Mechanical Engineering Group, Controls/Electrical Engineering Group, and Maintenance Engineering Group to ensure new processes and equipment meet process and quality standards.
  • Collaborates with Nucor's steel mills to align recycled material specifications and delivery with mill production needs.
  • Troubleshoots and corrects production downtime, quality, and efficiency issues at facilities.
  • Updates and maintains process documentation.
  • Tracks, analyzes and reports on plant metrics.
  • Develops testing protocols.  Schedules and coordinates testing with local/plant management.  Supervises tests to ensure complete data capture and validity.
  • Identifies and analyzes opportunities for improvement within the plants.
  • Performs other projects as assigned.

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial, Metallurgical, or Environmental Engineering (or related field)
  • 3 years of relevant experience
  • Hands-on operational experience in a manufacturing, industrial, recycling/metals, or steel mill environment preferred
  • Exposure to process improvement, Lean/Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies a plus

 

Preferred:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills (troubleshooting downtime, quality, efficiency issues)
  • Data analysis and reporting skills (tracking plant metrics)
  • Ability to design and run structured tests/experiments
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills (works with multiple engineering groups)
  • Proficiency with process documentation and technical writing
