Basic Job Functions:

The Material Handling Process Engineer responsibilities include but are not limited to:
•    Analyze and optimize end-to-end material flow (from receiving to final shipment) with a focus on raw materials, slabs, scrap, and finished steel products;
•    Design improvements for heavy material handling systems (inclusive of overhead cranes, forklifts, conveyors, rail and truck interfaces);
•    Lead and implement Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma initiatives to eliminate waste, reduce bottlenecks, and enhance process reliability;
•    Develop and maintain mill layout designs with consideration to flow paths, storage zones, staging areas, and safety clearances;
•    Conduct time studies, work measurements, and capacity analyses to justify equipment changes, labor standards, and process redesigns;
•    Support implementation of ERP (PSI) and software management systems to ensure real-time tracking and traceability of steel products;
•    Collaborate with production, quality, maintenance, inventory, and planning/scheduling teams to align supply chain flows with mill operations and minimize downtime;
•    Support new equipment or automation implementations with a focus on ROI and uptime;
•    Ensure compliance with safety protocols, OSHA regulations, and internal standards in all material handling redesigns; and
•    Lead or support root cause analyses of process failures or inefficiencies related to supply chain operations

Minimum Qualifications:

•    Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field;
•    3–7 years of experience in process engineering within manufacturing;
•    Proficiency in material handling systems, layout optimization, and logistics;
•    Strong background in Lean tools, 5S, Kaizen, VSM, and data-driven decision-making;
•    Experience working with large-scale ERP systems (PSI, Oracle) and understanding of inventory management and material control in manufacturing;
•    Excellent skills in Visio, Excel modeling, Power BI, and simulation tools (FlexSim, Arena, Python, etc.); and
•    Effective communication and collaboration with hourly teams, engineering staff, maintenance, and executive leadership.

Preferred Qualifications:

•    Six Sigma Green or Black Belt Certification.
•    Experience integrating automation or advanced material handling technologies in industrial settings.
•    Working knowledge of ISO 9001, AISC, or API standards relevant to steel or structural product manufacturing.
•    Familiarity with SCADA, MES, or WMS systems used in steel production.
