Basic Job Functions:
Nucor Steel Arkansas is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Surface Inspection Technician. This role is responsible for the reliability of automated inspection systems as well as for surface-quality decisions for containment and dispositioning of products.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Review live and recorded surface-inspection imagery, validate system alerts, and identify, classify, and investigate surface defects and trends.
- Establish and maintain inspection criteria; inspect material and make disposition decisions within established NSAR procedures in collaboration with metallurgists and tech reps with customer needs in mind.
- Maintain accurate inspection and system-performance records to support quality decisions and system reliability.
- Maintain automated inspection classifiers and develop or adjust rules to provide reliable information for material disposition.
- Partner with NSAR production and maintenance teams along with vendors to keep physical inspection systems operational and coordinate preventive maintenance.
- Plan and support long-term system upgrades and continuous improvement efforts with the broader Technical Services team (metallurgist team).
- Lead or support quality-event and root-cause investigations related to surface quality and inspection-system performance.
- Maintain regular communication with production and technical teammates to provide training, troubleshooting, and technical support, while actively gathering teammate feedback to improve defect identification, inspection criteria, and surface inspection system performance.
- Support customer visits when appropriate.
- Assist in the implementation/installation, maintenance/troubleshooting, and licensing of software and applications with surface inspection systems

Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years of steel industry experience in a quality, metallurgy, production, or steel industry related role.
- Experience with Excel and other Microsoft products.
- Knowledge of steel surface defects
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with automated inspection equipment, basic electrical/mechanical troubleshooting, and computer hardware, software interfaces, or networks.
- Technical certificate or associate degree in electronics, automation, industrial maintenance, or a related field.
- Experience with steel production processes, including casting, hot rolling, pickling, cold rolling, and galvanizing, as well as experience identifying steel surface imperfections associated with different processing steps.
