Basic Job Functions:
Nucor Steel Birmingham seeks an innovative, dynamic leader to direct its Safety and Health functions, delivering strategic expertise as we pursue our goal of becoming the world's safest steel company. Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.
Key Responsibilities
• Build strong relationships to foster excellence and engagement in safety culture, challenging the status quo.
• Collaborate with division teams to identify hazards and implement engineering solutions.
• Conduct regular safety audits across the mill, providing coaching and feedback to teammates and departments.
• Develop and analyze Safety and Health reports, partnering with operations to address trends.
• Advise management on concerns, offering critical support during investigations and major incidents.
• Design, implement, and manage safety training programs and systems.
• Spearhead safety-related projects to drive continuous improvement.
• Benchmark safety initiatives, projects, policies, and procedures with other Nucor divisions.
• Ensure full compliance with federal, state, local laws, and OSHA standards.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Minimum of five years of related experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Proven experience in a leadership role.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety or related field, plus 5+ years of relevant experience.
• OSHA 10/30-hour certification for 29 CFR 1910 and 1926, or ability to obtain within first 12 months.
• Experience managing workers’ compensation cases, including claim reporting, coordination with medical providers, and return to work planning.
• Experience as a First Responder.
