Basic Job Functions:

The Process Automation Engineer will work alongside the maintenance and operations teams to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the plant. While working as part of the process automation team, the engineer will lead by example with respect to safety, reliability, quality, costs, process improvement, and project management. The engineer will be responsible for the automation systems (referred to as UMS - Universal Middleware System) that connect the plant level 3 and various level 2 automation systems.  The engineer will ensure the optimum performance of data flow and collection for plant operations through continual improvement initiatives.  The engineer will work onsite alongside the line focused process automation teams, maintenance teams, operation teams, and information technology teams.

Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

The level 2 distinction is in reference to the automation system architecture (see ISA-95 or Purdue hierarchy of control) and is not indicative of seniority or degree of responsibility.  This role will focus on building, improving, and maintaining UMS which is made up of a multitude of different services and applications.  UMS will store and transfer process data from the level 3 and level 2 systems utilizing a mixture of databases, message queue, and direct message communication.  These systems will also contain web-based user interface systems which the NSWV team will use for quality, reporting, and operational purposes.  The engineer should be familiar with some of the above and possess enough working knowledge with different computer communication protocols to troubleshoot and implement system interfaces if needed. The engineer should not only be able to understand the underlying technology making up UMS, but also be willing and able to learn the sheet steel making process to aid in analyzing and solving system problems that could impact the process.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four-year degree in Engineering/Computer Science/Mathematics/Physics or related field and/or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrable experience or ability to troubleshoot, modify, and write software to control a function or system

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in industrial process control/automation and/or related education
  • Industrial process control/automation equipment upgrade experience
  • Experience working in a heavy industrial environment
  • Working knowledge of computer administration (e.g. Windows server OS)
  • Working knowledge with virtual machines (e.g. VMWare)
  • Experience working on Level 2 automation control systems (e.g. databases, setup models, C/C++/C# applications, front and back-end Web development)
  • Experience building, maintaining, and utilizing databases (e.g. SQL)
  • Working knowledge and experience with networking and communication technologies (e.g. Ethernet, fiber, switching, routing)
  • Experience with various communication protocols (e.g. Profinet, TCP/IP, UDP)
  • Experience using data analysis to identify process or equipment issues and develop solutions
