Basic Job Functions:

The Melt & Cast Metallurgist is an integral member of the Melt Shop team, responsible for working with teammates to develop solutions that support safety, profitability, and teammate development. This position is actively involved in practice and product quality decision-making, drives continuous improvement, and provides technical support to the production team. A key focus of this role is developing and implementing clean steel practices from a secondary metallurgy perspective to produce high-end sheet products.

 

The Melt & Cast Metallurgist will also be directly involved in developing training materials and communication tools to expand the technical knowledge of our team, partners, and customers.

Nucor Steel West Virginia is Nucor’s new greenfield sheet mill with advanced steelmaking capabilities and lower carbon emissions. 

 

Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Metallurgy, Material Science, Chemical Engineering or Equivalent
  • Minimum 4 Years of secondary refining metallurgy (ladle metallurgy furnace or degasser) related experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in secondary refining metallurgy (slag and inclusion management, degassing practices, and clean steel practices etc.).
  • Proficient in thermodynamic and kinetic calculations, both manually and using software such as Thermo-Calc or Fact Sage.
  • Advanced degree, such as an M.S. or Ph.D., in a relevant field.
