Basic Job Functions:

BASIC FUNCTIONS:  

The metallurgist position is a critical and essential position in the company’s in-house Quality Department that supports the continuous development of innovative steel products and improvements of existing steel production practices. 

 

Duties include but are not limited to: 
Review steelmaking processes to improve their metallurgical characteristics, yield, and cost. 
Provide technical expertise for process development and continuous improvement of steelmaking processes. 
Engage in new product and grade development through analysis, experiment, and implementation of new raw materials, chemistries, equipment, and manufacturing practices.
Utilize engineering, physical metallurgy, and steelmaking knowledge to optimize process variables to improve product quality, lower production costs, improve mechanical properties, and improve process efficiency. 
Implement and monitor testing practices per required specifications so that metallurgical requirements are met.
Review, purchase and install new metallurgical equipment for the upgrading of in-house testing capabilities.
Utilize statistical process control tools to direct continuous improvement activities.
Develop, revise, and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) for special manufacturing projects. 
Develop and coordinate quality and safety training programs for operations, maintenance, and quality assurance laboratory teams. Support sales and technical services with claims, new product inquiries, and development. 

Working hours may vary depending on the project or task assigned and some travel is required. Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor. Minimum Qualifications:

A qualified candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering, materials science or a related field and 12 months of experience in metallurgical engineering or materials science. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced degree in Metallurgical Engineering.
