Basic Job Functions:

Universal Industrial Gases, Inc. (UIG) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nucor and a well-established, global engineer, constructor, supplier and operator of air separation plants and related equipment and services, based in Bethlehem, PA. UIG owns and operates production plants across the USA which supply both Nucor steel sites and also third-party clients 24/7 with tonnage quantities of oxygen, nitrogen and argon.

 

UIG is currently seeking a Piping Designer in Bethlehem, PA. The Piping Designer will be primarily responsible for the completion of the detailed CAD design, CAD model creation and drafting required to support the sales process, project engineering and the fabrication and construction of air separation plants and their related equipment and component parts. Responsibilities include:

 

  • Establish project filing and storage and retrieval of CAD documents using UIG document management tools.
  • Create “SMART” piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID's) utilizing Autodesk plant 3D smart P&ID module and the electrical schematic diagrams associated with the various piping and equipment systems. 
  • Develop detailed 3D plant designs and any necessary CAD models and the associated 2D detail drawings (general arrangements, piping, support details, isometrics, orthographic details, and proposal layouts) and assembly drawings of piping skids, support structures, and pumping systems for fabrication at vendor shops.
  • Work with project engineering teammates to maintain schedule and delivery of CAD work products as required by the project.
  • Maintain company piping and other engineering standards and CAD models for equipment components. 
  • Check own work prior to release and lead peer review quality assurance practices with fellow teammates.
  • Conduct design review meetings.
  • Support construction projects in the field either from the office or at the construction site.

Minimum Qualifications:

1.    5 years front line work experience using CAD Plant 3D in a process plant setting.
2.    Experience working with MS Office, Visio & Project, Autodesk Plant 3D and P&ID
3.    Willingness to travel to project and vendor sites
 

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Ability to read and interpret engineering documentation, Smart P&ID’s, specifications, client requirements, prints/specs, technical writing, vendor drawings, quotations, bill of materials and valve and instrument lists.
  2. Prior hands-on project experience with large scale plant CAD designs, ideally in a cryogenic air separation environment.
  3. Strong document management and control skills and experience
